Living by the sea and longevity: research shows it

According to a recent study by Ohio State University, living close to the sea may contribute to a longer life.

Why? Milder temperatures, cleaner air, more opportunities to move and relax, in short, a natural elixir that promotes well-being and health.

Sardinia: where the sea meets longevity

And so, one wonders: could this also be why Sardinia, with its stunning beaches, is one of the world's five Blue Zones?

In eastern Sardinia, particularly in Ogliastra - a region where the sea meets mountains and untouched nature - some of the highest concentrations of centenarians in the world can be found. So maybe it’s no coincidence that this area is home to some of the most celebrated beaches on the planet.

Cala Goloritzé: the world's most beautiful beach 2025

In 2025, Cala Goloritzé was crowned the most beautiful beach in the world by the World's 50 Best Beaches ranking.

This natural jewel, located in the municipality of Baunei and reachable only on foot or by boat, has become a symbol of authentic Sardinia. Its crystal-clear waters, natural rock arch, and pristine environment make it truly unique.

Cala Mariolu: multiple times among the world's top beaches

Just a short distance away lies another wonder: Cala Mariolu. In 2024, it was ranked the world's 2nd most beautiful beach and Europe's top beach by The World's 50 Best Beaches.

Its turquoise waters, white pebbles, and wild atmosphere make it one of the most iconic spots in the Mediterranean.

Coincidence, or the secrets of a Blue Zone?

The link between crystal-clear waters, unspoiled nature, and healthy lifestyles seems to be part of the recipe that makes Ogliastra a land of longevity.

Beyond its beaches, this region offers genuine food, strong communities, and a slower pace of life - all recognized ingredients of the world's Blue Zones.
